About Càdadh

càdadh (pronounced kadoo) is an old gaelic word for tartan
I qualified from college as a Dress & Design teacher and taught in Glasgow for several years before moving to the Highlands in 1982 (when my husband took up a teaching post in the area).
This gave me an opportunity to be creative, so I set up a small clothing business specialising in made-to-measure outdoor clothing. After 18 years of gradually growing success I felt it was time for a change, so I sold the business for yet another venture!

I have always loved creating and even as a child I made clothes for my own dolls.
I now had the chance to be creative again in another direction, so I started to make dolls and established Càdadh 5 years ago.

I began with my Highland Clansmen. I spent many interesting months researching 17th century highland costume and taught myself the finer skills of porcelain doll making in my new pottery studio (a restored cow shed in the garden).

The CheckMate & FlowerMate dolls followed the next year, with the PlayMates, Sleepy's and Clann Bears being a further addition to the range. The accessories were introduced last year.

Every single item is made to order. I handcraft everything from start to finish with meticulous detail.
My aim is to make every doll and bear a very special item indeed.
I look forward to making something just for you.

The symbol on the Cadadh logo is taken from a stone carving found in the old burial ground in my village. This stone was only recently uncovered and found to have an ancient Pictish symbol carved at the top.
